7 de enero de este 2013, Darius Rucker, el excelente cantante de Hootie &
The Blowfish, publicaba un single extraído de su último disco, True Believers.
La canción elegida era una versión de un tema que interpretó junto a la mitad
de sus compositores en julio de 2012 en el Grand Ole Opry, «Wagon Wheel». “La
primera vez que la oí pensé “tengo que cantar esto””. Así describe Rucker
lo que sintió al escuchar esta peculiar canción que durante mucho tiempo se ha
convertido en una especie de himno para la banda de Virginia Old Crow Medicine
Show, sin duda uno de los referentes de la escena roots actual.
“Oí
que Dylan hizo esta canción en el Instituto y que nunca la acabó, aunque grabó
una versión para Pat Garrett y Billy The Kid. Cuando la oí pensé que debía
acabarla y así lo hice”. Esas son palabras de Ketch Secor, miembro de OCMS.
Efectivamente Dylan intentó grabar aquella canción incompleta titulada en aquel
momento «Rock Me Mama» para la banda sonora en la que aparecía, entre otras, la
mítica «Knocking On Heaven’s Door» pero no le convencía ninguna toma y no
encontraba finales adecuados para la letra. Secor fue el auto-encargado de hacerlo y
como no estaba seguro de qué opinaría Dylan de su osadía decidió que lo mejor
era enseñarle previamente el resultado a su hijo Jakob. El líder de los
Wallflowers quedó prendado del resultado y puso en contacto a Secor con el
mismísimo Bob. Éste le comentó al virginiano que alguna frase de la canción
provenía de un blues de Arthur Big Boy Crudup cuyo verdadero autor debía ser
Big Bill Broonzy, pero que los derechos de autor habían caducado, así que acordaron
firmar la nueva versión al 50% otorgando a OCMS el derecho de usarla cuando
quisiera. Y la cosa se convirtió en una auténtica delicia bluegrass.
El
EP, además, se completa con una interesante versión de «All Night Long» grabada en directo en The
Station Inn en 2003, aunque difícilmente se puede hacer sombra al tema central
del que, como curiosidad, realizan una excelente versión en directo los
asturianos Pilgrim Rose, cuyo primer disco ha sido producido por el gran Hendrik
Rover.
