Songwriters Americana 3.0: Los Nietos de Townes (Parte II)

Conozco a los guardaespaldas de Bob Dylan, y si Steve cree que puede subirse a su mesa de té con botas de cowboy, está tristemente equivocado. Townes Van Zandt.

La música de raíces americana vive un buen momento. La juventud de muchos de sus primeras espadas hace que pueda mirar al horizonte con tranquilidad. El futuro parece estar escrito, en contra de lo que pensaba Joe Strummer. Y no me refiero a gente como Ryan Adams, Will Hoge, Jesse Malin y otros primeros nombres de la actual songwriter roots music, sino de una aparente segunda división con ganas y fuerza para, en términos futbolísticos, subir de categoría. Calidad no les falta.

Precisamente, Justin Townes Earle, hijo de Steve y que pasea el nombre de Van Zandt allá donde va, podría ser su cabeza visible. Un músico inteligente, sagaz. Instalado ya casi al nivel de los nombrados Adams o Malin con sus apenas 30 años, y con el ascenso garantizado, aunque con unas costumbres demasiado cercanas a los inicios de su padre que a punto estuvieron de acabar con su carrera.  “Cuando escribo una canción imagino que puede llegar a ser un gran libro”, dice Justin. Y esa es la clave de todo. Las ganas de contar una historia. Todos ellos son escritores que cambian la pluma por las seis cuerdas de su guitarra. Dylan Leblanc, que tiene más cerca los 20 que los 30 años lo tiene claro. “Mi abuelo solía cantar mucho con una Gibson clásica que tenía. Ahí decidí que quería hacer canciones, mientras mi madre cocinaba y mi abuelo imitaba a discos de John Prine” dice para Amelia’s Magazine. “De niño tenía problemas de atención, así que tuve que aprender a concentrarme para hacer canciones. Me gusta Van Zandt, a quién no, pero también los Stones o Neil Young” continúa. Algo parecido a lo que sucede con Nick Dittmeier que desde 2006 encabeza el proyecto Slithering Beast. Un songwriter parapetado tras el nombre de una banda. “Diría que mis últimos discos también han empezado a dejarse influir por el rock and roll y el soul. Probablemente a Townes le hubiera pasado algo parecido” nos asegura. Brett Detar, tras abandonar The Juliana Theory, y adentrarse en la música de raíces piensa que “hay una tendencia, al menos en algunos músicos, a querer mirar hacia atrás, a los que nos precedieron. Rendir tributo a ese legado. Hay un gran fondo de música en el sur del país que ha ido creciendo a lo largo de 100 años y creo que hay bastantes músicos que, como yo, quieren seguir los pasos y la manera de trabajar de nuestros antepasados”. A sus 35 años, Detar parece haber encontrado su camino. “Estoy muy influenciado por todas las leyendas – Townes Van Zandt, Hank Williams, Ralph Stanley, Dylan, Son House, Clark Guy, Howlin ‘Wolf, Bill Monroe, Ernest Tubb, The Louvin Brothers, The Carter Family y toda su descendencia, Kristofferson, The Band, Loretta Lynn, Gram Parsons, y la lista sigue y sigue. ¿Por qué estoy influenciado por muchas de estas leyendas? Creo que porque ninguno de ellos tiene una cualidad tangible en su música. Su valor no se puede medir. Se puede sentir. El oyente se siente inquieto, despiertan algo en quien oye sus canciones. No sé si son sus letras, sus melodías, el sonido de sus voces…Su calidad está en su música en sí, y eso es algo que cualquier músico de hoy en día perseguiría indudablemente”. Igual le sucede a Matt Woods, artífice del excepcional Manifesto. “Soy un fan de las canciones. Por tanto debo sentirme obligatoriamente influenciado por gente como Kris Kristofferson, Steve Earles, Townes Van Zandt, Tom Petty o John Fogerty. Me gustan los compositores diferentes por razones diferentes: las historias, su gancho personal, el feeling, la manera de emocionar… “. Brian Lumley, que acaba de editar su disco de debut opina lo mismo. “Creo que hay un movimiento sutil hacia la música de raíces tanto en Estados Unidos como en el resto del mundo. Parece que poco a poco nos vamos acercando a nuestros orígenes musicales y cada vez hay un mayor número de oyentes y de artistas. Eso facilita la escucha y la compra de música permitiendo a los músicos un enfoque más orgánico. Y creo que eso es muy bueno”.
